Peter van der Spek

Peter received is PhD at the Erasmus University Rotterdam. Under supervision of his promotores professor D. Bootsma and J.H.J. Hoeijmakers, he completed his thesis “Cloning and Characterization of Excision Repair genes”. Van der Spek held positions at the University of Osaka and Tokyo RIKEN Institutes, Japan. In parallel, he obtained a visiting professorship at the Melbourne based Peter MacCallum Cancer Institute, Australia. Subsequently, he founded the Organon Bioinformatics group after Akzo-Nobel had signed up for the Incyte database. Three years later, he joined Johnson & Johnson Pharmaceutical Research and Development, where he was responsible for setting up the Bioinformatics group. Also, he supported ten drug discovery programs for different therapeutic areas, working in a global team with scientists from the US based La Jolla, Raritan and Springhouse Divisions. Since March of 2003, Van der Spek holds a position at the Erasmus University Medical Center as professor in Bioinformatics.
